Now, even the mayors of Delhi are scrambling for free IPL passes. Earlier, when there was just one mayor for the entire city, passes for cricket matches held at the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD)-owned Feroz Shah Kotla stadium were given to the title holder.
With trifurcation, the stadium has come under South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), leaving out the two other mayors of the city — North and East Delhi Municipal Corporation — without the customary passes.
Even the officials have been left high and dry since the passes cannot be distributed among all. “There is no formal arrangement for passes but an unspoken code existed in the unified MCD where passes were provided to the mayor, the leader of the opposition and a few other officials on demand basis. With the stadium now under the SDMC, only the mayor and the officials of that corporation can lay a rightful claim to the passes,” said a senior official. He added that if the mayors of the other two corporations want tickets, they will have to put in a request in advance.
However, requests have already started pouring in for the next IPL match to be held on May 15 at the stadium.
Now that the trifurcation is complete and the mayors and officials have taken charge, many are in a hurry to land a few passes.
Subhash Arya, leader of the House of SDMC, however, said that the passes for IPL matches are entirely dependent on availability. “I have never asked for them but there are some leaders who want them. If there is an availability, they are not denied,” he said.
Officials of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation said that it was unfair to demand passes in advance.
"With three corporations being formed, the number of HoDs has increased from about 35 to more than a 100. It will be very difficult to get passes as the demand will increase,” said an official.
