East Delhi may soon beat the rest of the city in its promotion of sports. Despite having two modern facilities - the Yamuna Sports Complex and Commonwealth Games Village - the east corporation has decided to build a multi-specialty sports complex at Trilokpuri.
The complex will have a football ground, a walkway, a running track, a swimming pool and a gymnasium among other facilities.
According to officials, the corporation has already drafted a model of the complex which will spread over an area of 19,050 square meters.
"Instead of going to different stadiums for different sports, we decided to have one single complex for nearly all the important sports. It will have both outdoor and indoor facilities for sportsmen. Walkways, running tracks and gymnasium will be opened for general public," said a senior corporation official.
The complex will have a multipurpose hall for gymnastics, wrestling, skating, boxing and board games.Officials said, it will also have a parking capacity of around 50 vehicles.
The construction of the complex, which may cost around R17 crore, is likely to start soon, they added.
Apart from this, the corporation has also decided to open sports academies in 40 municipal schools. For this purpose, the corporation plans to hire coaches from the National Institute of Sports. The coaches will train the students in hockey, football and other sports.
"It is important to impart sports training which is why we have chosen 40 schools in the pilot project. We will hire 10 coaches from the NIS. One coach will take care of four schools," said BB Tyagi, leader of the House in east corporation.
