A heavy goods carrier brought the entire traffic to a standstill for eight hours at one of the most crucial junctions in the Capital on Wednesday morning, police said.
The vehicle, which was speeding along on the Gurgaon-Parade Road junction, overturned at 8 am, blocking the carriageway for eight hours. The incident occurred after the driver failed to maintain his balance.
“The truck was finally towed away at 3 pm after a special hydraulic crane from west Delhi’s Mayapuri area was commissioned for the purpose.
The vehicle was overloaded with goods and its removal ended-up blocking the carriageway next to it as well,” said Satyendra Garg, joint commissioner of police (traffic).
Garg said that the accident had ended-up blocking traffic en route the IGI airport, Rao Tula Ram Marg, Vasant Vihar and the Mahipalpur-Mehrauli road. Commuters headed to central Delhi from both Dhaula Kuan and Gurgaon were left stranded for hours without much help.
“I had left home at 8:30 am and reached my office at Barakhamba Road only at 11 am. There was absolutely no space as two lanes of the three-lane road were jammed. I should have taken the Metro,” said Rajnish Ahuja (35), a sales executive and resident of Moti Bagh.
The traffic police said the errant driver has been arrested and booked for rash and negligent driving and relevant sections of the IPC.
