Two killed, four injured in two road accidents in Capital

NEW DELHI: Two persons were killed and four others injured in two separate road accidents reported from central and north Delhi in the early hours of Sunday. In the first accident, two young men were killed and their two friends critically injured when the Hyundai Creta SUV they were travelling in turned turtle after hitting the road divider.
The accident occurred around 4.30 am on the Ring Road behind the Red Fort.
According to the police, the car was running at a speed of over 120 kmph when its driver lost control and the car overturned on the road at least five times after hitting the road divider. While the driver and the passenger on the front seat survived due to the vehicle’s safety airbags, the two seated on the rear seat were thrown out of the SUV’s rear windows while the vehicle was rolling on the road. The accident was captured by a CCTV camera.
Those who were killed in the accident were identified as Hemant Rathi and Aman Punia, both aged between 19 and 22 years. The two injured persons have been identified as Anmol Gupta and Himanshu. All four were residents of Yamuna Vihar in northeast Delhi and students at different colleges in Delhi. The SUV belongs to Gupta’s father, said a police officer.
A senior police officer said the four had left their homes around 4 am for a joyride. “They first went to Connaught Place. Around 4.30 am, they were returning home when Gupta who was driving the vehicle at a high speed lost control and rammed it into a road divider,” the officer said.
The impact of the accident was such that the SUV was flung a few feet into the air and rolled on the road four to five times before coming to rest some ten metres away from the spot where it had hit the road divider, said the officer.
The injured persons were taken to Sushruta Trauma Centre where doctors pronounced two of them dead on admission. The condition of the other two was stated to be serious. A case in connection with the accident was registered at the Kotwali police station.
In another accident that took place around 12.20 am on Bahadur Shah Zafar Margin central Delhi, two bike rs were injured, one of them seriously, when their sports bike was hit by a speeding black Volkswagen Polo car while both the vehicles were taking a U-turn, police said.
The injured men, identified as Sarfaraj and Sohail, were taken to Lok Nayak Hospital for medical aid. The errant car driver managed to escape from the accident spot. A case has been registered at the IP Estate police station.
