After much deliberation, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has decided to open the underground parking of Shivaji Stadium for the general public from February end or March beginning.
Car owners will, however, have to shell out twice or thrice the present parking charges with the Supreme Court set up monitoring committee expected to suggest increased parking rates in the city.
The underground parking facility can accommodate 1,500 cars and with the automated parking at Baba Kharak Singh Marg to be inaugurated soon, Connaught Place will have an additional space for 1,408 cars.
The Shivaji Stadium was to be used during the Commonwealth Games as practice venue for hockey but the NDMC could not ready it on time. For the last few months, the project has been witnessing delay.
According to officials of NDMC, the monitoring committee as well as the Delhi government have set up a task force which will be soon finalising parking rates in the city and the public can expect a double or triple rise in the charges. One the recommendations come up, the rest of Delhi will also see a jump in the parking rates.
Commenting on the delay in the completion of Shivaji Stadium, an official blamed the construction agency. “There are some internal problems between the agency and NDMC in view of which we are yet to release the full payments,” he said.
