Brokering is the most popular business among Delhiites. This is what a recent survey on service sector enterprises in Delhi says.
The survey says, real estate, renting and related businesses is the biggest employment provider in the unorganised service sector in the Capital. Highest to lowest employers
Of the 6.44 lakh people working in the unorganised sector, 104,227 or 16.2 per cent people earn brokerage for sale and purchase of residential and non-residential buildings.
Prepared by the planning department of Delhi, the ‘Report on service sector enterprises’ is based on a survey done between July 2006 and June 2007.
Chaat stalls, parantha counters, and chicken shops, restaurants and tea kiosks, collectively, employ 89,148 people or 13.85 per cent people, coming in second to real estate.
Of the 2.13 lakh enterprises and establishments in Delhi, 39,129 deal in real estate. The report also said that one in 10 enterprises is run by women.
“The service sector is Delhi’s backbone as it contributes about 79 per cent of gross state domestic product and 35 per cent of Delhi works in this segment,” says B K Sharma, director, directorate of economics and statistics.
People offering personalised services like salon, beauty parlour, helps and drivers form the third largest group of workers.
With tuition centres, dance and art schools, education comes in fourth, the report said.
Delhi Finance Minister A K Walia says, while the average employment per enterprise in Delhi is 2.7, the national average, said Walia, is 2.
The gross value added per annum by per enterprise in this sector in Delhi is Rs 2.87 lakh against Rs 1.48 lakh at the national level.
