This piece of news could put another dent in the image of Uttar Pradesh police, which has once again come under fire for the crumbling law and order situation in the state with eight rapes reported in 48 hours.
A 49-year-old US national, identified as Mellisa Lucas, approached the Delhi police to lodge a complaint not only against an accused but also UP police. Lucas has been in India for the past three years; she travels to various religious places all over the country.
She told the police that on June 4 she was in a temple in Vrindavan when she had an argument with a group of foreign nationals. She said one of them, another US national, beat her up badly following the argument. She approached the local police who didn't lodge any FIR. The SHO of the local station refused to take her complaint.
In her complaint to the Delhi police, Lucas claimed she also approached the Inspector General also but no one listened to her.
Delhi police have now conducted a medical examination of the woman that confirmed injuries on her body and have written to UP police asking them to lodge an FIR in the matter.
"She approached Delhi police and met the police commissioner on Tuesday. He ordered the officer to conduct her medical examination," the officer added.
"When she approached us we told her that we couldn't register a case as the incident had taken place in Mathura. But to help her we got the medical examination conducted. I have written to Mathura senior superintendent of police asking him to register a case. We have also attached the medical report and her complaint with the letter," K C Dwivedi, additional commissioner of police (New Delhi) said.
"She had come to Delhi to lodge a complaint with the US embassy as she felt harassed by UP police. She has even named the top officer who refused to lodge her complaint," the officer said.
