In a possible case of mob lynching, two thieves died and one suffered serious injuries after local residents allegedly beat them up when they were trying to steal copper wires in Jaffarpur Kalan area in Southwest Delhi.
The police said the incident was reported on Sunday morning from Ishapur village in the area. Local residents however claimed that the thieves died of electrocution.
“A few local residents called and told us about three people who were lying just below high tension wires in a mysterious condition. When we reached the spot, we found that the three men in their 20s were lying in the middle of the field with marks all over their bodies. We rushed them to Rao Tula Ram Hospital. The doctors pronounced two of them dead while the third one was admitted,” said a senior police officer.
The deceased were later identified as Abhay and Raju. The injured, Dharmender, told the police that they had gone to steal high-tension copper wire. But when they were cutting the wire they got electric shocks. Two more of their accomplices fled from the spot, he told the police.
The police said they are probing the involvement of some local residents in the incident as Dharmender told them that some locals also beat them up.
“We are yet to come on any conclusion about the reason for their death as Dharmender’s statement indicates something else,” said a senior police officer.
The police said they have identified two other accomplices and are looking for them to get the exact version of the incident.
“Though there are burn marks on their bodies, we are yet to verify a few things. We are also waiting for the postmortem reports,” added a senior police officer.
The police said the trio was part of a gang which had already stolen copper wires from 15 different villages and used to do their work during load shedding.
A case has been registered.
