The history of the Walled City would be depicted through this museum.
Starting from the pre-Mughal period the museum would also showcase Mughal period, year of mutiny (1857), British rule (1857-1947), post independence (1947-2008) and the present time.
These periods would be divided into themes such as architecture, city planning, trade and crafts, habitat, heritage, transportation, municipal governance, people and cuisine.
The MCD has invited expression of interest for the museum and work would start on 31 August, when it would be officially inaugurated. “We have removed all the encroachment so restoration work can start. After August 31, the outer façade will also be improved. Ancient pictures of the walled city, Red Fort, Jama Masjid, Feroz Shah Kotla will also be showcased in this museum,” added Mehra.
The museum would also serve as an orientation centre for national and international tourists visiting Old Delhi. To revive interest in the history of Old City tourists would be first oriented about the heritage and thereafter-actual tours would be conducted.
An advisory board would also be constituted for the heritage museum and tourist orientation centre. Two municipal councillors and two senior officers would also be nominated to the board.
Vijay Goel, senior BJP leader, contributed Rs 50 lakh out of his MP fund for the restoration of the museum.
A heritage library and a research centre would be established as a part of the heritage museum for conducting research and field studies. Shahjahanabad was built by emperor Shahjahan in the 17th century.
