For 20 years, he eluded custody as the police thought he was dead. However, his luck ran out recently and the police caught the man wanted in several cases.
Wanted for murder and other heinous crimes, 47-year-old Akthar was caught from south Delhi's Mehrauli. Akhtar was in the area to catch a bus to Pul Prahladpur, where he lives with his family.
"He was living in Delhi under an assumed name for the past 20 years. He had spread rumours of his own death, so as to avoid the dragnet of law," said HGS Dhaliwal, deputy commissioner of police (south).
When the police intercepted him, he introduced himself as Sadiq Khan and produced his voter's identity card as proof. However, the police got suspicious when the father's name in his ration card appeared to be a different one.
"While he was hiding in Delhi, Akhtar got several identification documents made as Sadiq Khan. He also bought a house in Delhi," said Dhaliwal.
According to the DCP, Akhtar told the police that he was a proclaimed offender in several cases, including murder and kidnapping. Akhtar also confessed that he was living in Pul Prahladpur area under an assumed identity to avoid arrest.
According to the police, Akhtar was wanted for a 1993 theft-murder, when he and his associates broke into a transporters godown of a transporter in Bareilley, Uttar Pradesh, and allegedly killed the guard who resisted their attempt to robbery.
In the same year, Akhtar and his associates kidnapped a boy from Aligarh. The boy was, however, was rescued within three-four days.
"The accused confirmed that he knew he is was wanted in all these cases and has been declared Proclaimed Offender in these cases. So to avoid his arrest, he was hiding in Delhi under the assumed identity," Dhaliwal said.
