A hard day of work should be followed by recreation at a relaxing place, and so councillors of South and North Delhi have asked for a club — one on the lines of Constitution Club.
According to the elected members, they need a recreational club where they can gather and exchange ideas. The space can also be used to hold functions and meetings.
Mayor of South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) Savita Gupta said that the corporation had ample space for the construction of such a club. The plot behind Savitri Cinema has already been earmarked for it.
“We have vacant land in Nehru Place near Savitri Cinema, which can be explored. Funds can also be generated for the construction,” she said.
According to councillors, the unified MCD had never done any construction for their benefit.
“We do so much for the people of Delhi, but get no salary in return. At least we should get a club for relaxation, as the headquarters does not offer any such facility,” said a senior councillor.
The councillors demanded that the club should include an in-house dining facility, health club and a hall to organise social functions and events.
As the SDMC has a surplus budget of R360 crore, it is in a position to spend some money on construction of the club. The proposal for the club will be discussed in a meeting.
To make sure that officials of its corporation do not feel left out, the North Delhi Municipal Corporation is also planning to build a health facility for them either at the Civic Centre, its headquarters, or at Ambedkar stadium. It will include a gym and swimming pool.
