If the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has its way, there might soon be two India Habitat Centres (IHC) in the city.
The civic agency has decided to construct a cultural centre on the lines of India Habitat Centre (IHC) located on Lodhi Road.
The civic agency has identified a nine-acre plot in west Delhi's Raja Garden, which will be used for this purpose.
While 20 per cent of the land will be utilised for constructing the Centre, the rest will be used for developing a five star hotel.
The civic agency has sent the proposal to the Lt Governor for approval.
“The file has been received and a decision on it will be taken soon by the Lt. Governor,” said Ranjan Mukherjee, Officer on Special Duty to the LG.
Once the Lt. Governor clears the project, it will be tabled in the MCD's high-powered Standing committee for approval and once approved, work on it may begin this year.
The civic agency plans to develop the project on a public private partnership (PPP) basis.
“The site is surrounded by a mall, a Metro station, the Ring Road and other commercial areas,” said a senior MCD official.
“It is merely three-km from the Rajouri Garden metro station. Keeping the commercial aspect in mind, we decided to go for a Habitat Centre and a five star hotel too,” added the MCD official.
He added that the civic agency can earn a minimum of Rs. 10 crore per year through this project.
“The main aim of this project is to create a proper place for social get-togethers,” added the official.
The Habitat Centre will have a number of facilities such as a conference hall, a banquet hall, a library, an exhibition hall, food courts and art galleries, among others.
Though it will be developed privately, the MCD will run it and will have complete control over it. The site will be handed over to the private developer on a 60 year lease.
“Once the Habitat Centre is handed over, MCD and the developer will function independently,” added the official.
