A 35-year-old woman and her daughter were found strangulated under mysterious circumstances at a government flat in south Delhi’s Saket area on Tuesday afternoon.
Chhaya Sharma, deputy commissioner of police (south), said the bodies of Tara Devi and Kajal (13) were recovered from their acquaintance Kamla Devi’s ground-storey flat located in Pushp Vihar’s sector 4 in Saket area. They duo had arrived from their native village of Ramnagar in Uttarakhand in the morning.
“The deceased were introduced as family to Kamla Devi by a man identified as Jagdish, who told her that he also belonged to the same village and was a tailor by profession,” said a senior police officer investigating the incident.
Kamla, who works as a peon at a CPWD office and is yet to be questioned at length about the incident as she is in a state of shock, allowed the trio inside her house shortly before she left for work around 10:30am.
Minutes later, Kamla’s eldest daughter Sangeeta handed Jagdish a duplicate key to the house and left for work while her younger sister Priyanka went to school.
When Kamla returned around 12 pm, she found Tara and Kajal’s bloated bodies in her kitchen and raised an alarm. Her neighbours intimated the police around 12:15pm. “I saw their bodies but couldn’t react and just broke down. I didn’t make the PCR call, the neighbours had to do it,” Kamla said.
Police said they were waiting for the post mortem report of the victims and searching for Jagdish, who is absconding.
