A 19-year-old woman from Jammu and Kashmir who married a man outside her religion was chased to the city by her relatives and allegedly beaten at a girl’s hostel in Qutub Institutional area on Thursday morning.
The girls’ relatives, along with policemen from the Valley, came to the city to take her back. The men also beat up the former chief of National Commission for Women Mohini Giri when she tried to save the woman.
Police said Bhavna (her assumed name), a Muslim from Nagrota, came to the city with her boyfriend Khemraj, a Hindu, on Wednesday. The two were married the same day and she got an accommodation at the Guild of Service Hostel in Qutub Institutional Area with the help of a friend.
Police said the two eloped to Delhi after they getting threat calls back home.
“On Thursday morning, some men, including some policemen, came to the hostel. They dragged the girl out of her hostel room, pinned her down to the floor and were screaming. When Mohini Giri, chairperson of the guild, went to her rescue, they misbehaved with her and pushed her,” said Usha Rai, an eyewitness.
“The couple were married according to Hindu rituals on Wednesday. They were to go to a city court on Thursday when the men reportedly barged in and started beating her,” said Giri. She suffered injuries on her right arm. The accused almost dragged Bhavna out of the main gate, when the hostel inmates stopped them.
A call was made to the commissioner of police and a police force was sent to protect the woman.
Bhavna said, “My father wanted to kill my husband. We came to Delhi where police provided us protection and personally took us to a court to register our marriage.”
Her husband Khemraj said, “We were neighbours since childhood and are in love for the last three years. Her parents threatened to kill me when they came to know about our relationship.”
Police said Bhavna’s father registered an FIR in Nagrota accusing Khemraj of abducted her. Bhavna’s uncle, who is is reportedly an MLA, put pressure on the police to tap her phone.
