A six-month-old blind murder case, which was almost forgotten by its investigators, has been solved through a chance sighting of the deceased’s picture in Zipnet (Zonal Integrated Police Network) record by officers of a different department in east district police.
Ironically, the investigators had failed to identify the victim — Sanjay Verma, 45 — and had almost forgotten the case, said a police officer.
The murder case, the FIR for which was registered in the beginning of 2012 at the Shakarpur police station, took an interesting turn when it came to light that the victim was allegedly murdered by his wife Poonam and her two paramours.
According to police, Poonam, despite being physically challenged, travelled 10km on her scooter, especially designed for the physically challenged, escorting her paramours. The trio dumped the body in Shakarpur.
Poonam misled her in-laws and kept the matter under the wraps by cooking up false stories about her husband’s disappearance, said the officer.
Her second paramour, whose name has been withheld, is still absconding. Verma lived with his wife and children in central Delhi’s Nabi Karim.
A senior police officer said the first breakthrough in the case came when an officer while scanning the Zipnet record found the victim’s description similar to a person whose missing complaint was lodged at the Nabi Karim police station in April.
“Since the missing complaint was lodged four months after the recovery of the body by his wife, the needle of suspicion pointed towards her. She was subjected to sustained interrogation during which she broke down and confessed to the crime,” said the senior officer.
Poonam, the officer said, revealed that she with the help of her paramours first made her husband drink liquor near Hanuman Temple and then stabbed him with a weapon.
