NOIDA: The Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) has contested the figures of accident fatalities on the Yamuna Expressway released by the Uttar Pradesh police, which Hindustan Times had quoted in a report in its June 15 edition.

Anil Agrawal, additional director general (traffic) of Uttar Pradesh, had on June 14 tweeted: “Please mind your speed on #YamunaExpressway. 1585 lives were lost in 2015 in road accidents.”

Along with the tweet, Agrawal had attached figures of fatalities in the five districts of UP through which the expressway runs. (See tweet grab)

The Yamuna authority, however, put the number of deaths on the expressway at 143 in 2015. Besides, 403 major and 989 minor injuries were reported in 2015, it said.

Agrawal stood by his tweet. He said his figures were collected from various police stations along the expressway.

Talking to Hindustan Times, Agrawal had said speeding was the lone reason for the fatalities on the expressway. He said his idea was not to run down the expressway and the tweet was aimed at cautioning commuters that the expressway had become dangerous as fatalities were on the rise.
