The initiative is part of the Delhi education department’s decision to provide tablets to all teachers so that they spend less time on routine ‘non-academic works’ and focus on teaching.

Parents of Delhi government school students will soon get alerts about attendance of their wards every day.

The initiative is part of the Delhi education department’s decision to provide tablets to all teachers so that they spend less time on routine ‘non-academic works’ and focus on teaching.

“The in-built features will enable teachers to mark attendance on tablets. The moment attendance status is fed, an SMS will be generated and delivered to the parents concerned,” said Atishi Marlena, advisor to deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia, who holds the education portfolio. The parent will then get to know if the ward is present or missed school.

During the two parent-teacher meetings held recently, parents had complained that their children used to leave home for school almost every day but the records showed low attendance, Marlena said.

Such electronic monitoring of attendance is available in some public schools, she said.

There are about 50,000 teachers in Delhi government schools, including the guest ones, and about 1,000 principals.

Sisodia has directed the information technology department to prepare a proposal to procure tablets with the features required.

The project will cost an estimated R 50 crore. The education department wants to provide the tablets to teachers before the final results of this academic session that will end in March.

Eventually, more features will be added, including tabulation of exam results and teacher training modules. The government will provide limited free internet data per month to all teachers.

“Most teachers complain that they don’t have more time for teaching as they are engaged in data entry or management works, including maintenance of attendance registers, preparation of report cards of students, etc. Through the tablets, such work could be done away with,” Marlena said.

The officials said the project is likely to be implemented at the earliest as it will not require Cabinet approval. The education department has separate budget for such projects.
