According to the police, the accident took place 11 km away from Jewar Toll plaza under Rabupura police station when two cars collided while overtaking. This was followed by other cars ramming into each other, some 77km from Delhi on the expressway that connects the Capital to Agra.

“The fog was basically the reason for pile-up on the expressway. The deceased has been identified as Geeta Gaud, a woman from Delhi. The injured were admitted to Kailash Hospital and a crane was deployed to remove the cars,” said Ajay Kumar, incharge of Rabupura police station.

Dileep Singh, deputy superintendent of police, Jewar, told: “The first accident occurred at about 8 am when visibility was close to 50 meters at the expressway. As many as 23 more vehicles failed to spot the accident and resulted in a pile-up. Fortunately, all of the commuters in the cars involved in the accidents, survived with minor injuries.”

The pile-up and fog also resulted in an hour-long traffic jam. Police and rescue teams rushed to the spot.

“It took us an hour to clear the accident site and restore normal traffic at the Expressway. Once again, the commuters ignored the warnings of low visibility and high speed of the cars led to the accidents,” Singh added.

“It was impossible to drive on the Yamuna Expressway. I had planned to visit Agra on Sunday so I left my residence at Sector 122 at about 7 am. It took me one hour to reach Yamuna Expressway. The fog was so dense that I could not drive over 40 kmph. I decided to take a halt at the first restaurant after Jewar toll plaza and waited till the fog dispersed,” said Aniket Singh, an MNC worker and resident of Noida Sector 122.
