Tadipatri has been awarded multiple times for cleanliness and waste-management in 2015.

Municipal sources suggest the EDMC plans to first implement the policies in Shahdara south zone on a step-by-step basis. The corporation plans to adopt a decentralised approach.

Officials say the first priority is to beautify the roads and all major points which witness heavy footfall and are maintained by the corporation. “Beautification plays a major part in changing the mindset of the people. Through the move we plan to address littering and reckless dumping of garbage on streets,” said the official.

The corporation plans to adopt a new approach towards the collection and disposal of garbage. “Rather than just providing door-to-door collection of garbage from the residents, the civic body officials are mulling over introducing separate collection and transportation systems for household, commercial and market waste,” he added.

East Delhi on an average produces 2,200 tons of waste daily. However, due to lack of an effective garbage management system, the entire waste is dumped at the Ghazipur landfill site. The site was made operational in 1984 and currently harbours more than 50 lakh tonnes of garbage and stands tall at over 25 metres or around the same size as a 10-storey building.

This also resulted in a dismal performance of the municipal corporation in the Swachh Bharat rankings which were made public by the ministry of urban development last year. The MCD ranked 398 out of 476 municipal corporations in the country.

Apart from garbage management, the municipal corporation plans to take ideas from Tadipatri for betterment of primary health services, public toilets, and animal menace.

“We have asked Tadipatri municipality officials to help us prepare a similar model for us to tackle the basic issues more efficiently,” said an east Delhi municipal official.
