He said that while the limit on the per capital consumption of internet provided free will be as defined by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the East Delhi project will be one-of-a-kind public WiFi initiative in the country.

Khetan also said that the government is working to set up a common network fibre network for basic services. Providing free WIFI in the city was a poll promise that the DDC had been working on since last year. “For us the definition of a smart city is that five things should remarkably change, health, education, water, electricity, public transport and safety. For this the common fibre network is very important,” said Khetan.

He added that the work on common fibre network has already been initiated and PWD has been made the nodal agency for the project. “Fibre to home - we will try to provide high speed fibre in every house so that at GB speed people can access Internet,” said Khetan.
