More than 75 persons were detained and half-a-dozen vehicles impounded after a group demanding reservation for the Jat community turned violent in central Delhi on Friday evening.
Police said violence erupted sporadically after around 75 members of the group gathered near the Jantar Mantar monument and clashed with police personnel deployed in the area.
The agitators then made their way to cars parked around the area before proceeding to vandalise them. Over a dozen police personnel had already been injured before police resorted to using water cannons and a lathi charge to prevent the situation from slipping out of control.
“We have registered a case of rioting and causing damage to public property against at least 53 persons at the Parliament Street police station,” said Deepak Mishra, special commissioner of police (law and order).
The episode comes a day after violence erupted at a west Delhi locality post a showdown between members of two separate communities. The persons detained do not belong to any particular group or organisation.
