"The man has been identified as Rohming Liana and claims to be the general secretary of the Mizoram Rifle Club. He was about to board a train to Guwahati with one of his associates when we arrested him at 10:30am at the railway station," said Bhairon Singh Gurjar, additional deputy commissioner of police (railways).

Police said a .22 bore rifle and 1,025 bullets of the same specification were recovered from Liana. The man was immediately placed under arrest and a case of Arms Act was slapped against him. He was handed over to Delhi Police's elite anti-terror wing Special Cell.

"During the course of our investigation, Liana did produce an identity card of the said club but failed to produce a licence of the cartridges. Carrying cartridges without licence is an offence, henceforth he has been booked under sector 25 of Arms Act," said a senior police officer.

Police said Liana was returning to Mizoram with his team after participating in a national-level competition at Dr Karni Shooting Range in the national Capital. Liana was apprehended while he was entering platform to board Guwahti-bound North-East Express, senior police and railway officials said.

"What aroused our suspicion was the fact that Liana refused to keep his bag in the X-Ray scanner for checking despite the insistence of the security personnel on duty. He kept refusing to hand over the bag to them. It is then that he was taken aside and the arms and ammunition recovered," the officer said.

Police said Liana's custody had been handed over to the special cell and further investigations were underway. "The investigators are further questioning the man. We are taking extra precaution as it was Republic Day. The background checking is also being done," the official said.
