She is 15. He is 35, married and a father of two kids. Her father forced her into marrying the man — twenty years elder to her— for Rs 60,000 and an e-rickshaw.
The police have arrested the girl’s father and her four relatives under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act.
The victim a 15-year-old had filed a police complaint alleging that her father had taken money from the groom’s family for agreeing to the marriage. The incident was reported from north-west Delhi’s Bhalswa Dairy.
The girl’s father, who works as an e-rickshaw driver had taken Rs 60,000 and an e-rickshaw before agreeing to the marriage. The 35-year-old groom also runs an e-rickshaw for a living. Both live in the Bhalswa Dairy area.
According to police, in February they received information about a child marriage at the Bhalswa Dairy area which had been solemnized against the girl’s wishes. DCP (North West) Vijay Singh said that police traced the minor girl but the accused persons, including her father were missing. The victim filed complaint after which police registered an FIR under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act and started investigation.
“On Saturday we received tip-off about the accused men and arrested them,” said Singh.
During interrogation, police found that the child’s wedding was held at her father’s residence. Police investigation confirmed the girl’s allegation that her husband was married and has two kids from his first marriage. “She was not ready to marry him but her father took Rs 60,000 and an e-rickshaw from the groom,” said DCP Singh.
“On the day of her wedding, the victim said her would-be husband thrashed him when she refused to marry. She said she fainted and did not remember what happened at the wedding,” Singh said.
The victim told the police that she left her husband’s house after marriage and returned to her father’s place. Her father allegedly took another Rs 20,000 from her husband and forced her to return.
However, this time the minor girl reached her elder sister’s house and informed the police about her case.
When the police questioned her elder sister about the case, she said she did not know that her minor sister was forced into the marriage.
