A camel ride, coffee and dinner dates, movie bundles and extra classes. These were among the 221 items that were put up on auction at the Faculty of Management Studies’ (FMS) annual Silent Auction.
The big winner this year, however, was an offer for customised on-the-spot paintings.
Five people bid for it and Rs. 5,000 was collected. Last year, an Iftaar party at Karim’s was the winner. Fifteen people had bid for it and Rs. 7,500 were collected.
A salsa dance offered by a girl found a single bidder at Rs. 2,000.
The annual event is hosted by Vihaan, the social service society of FMS, where there is no shouting out of bids or impassioned outdoing.
The students offer items, extra classes, dinner dates and sometime quirky things such as a witty conversation. The same students bid for these things. The maximum bids — 140 — were received for the society’s T shirts.
While last year the students were able to collect around Rs. 1.46 lakh rupees, this year, it has gone up to Rs. 1.7 lakh.
The number of bids at 856 almost doubled as compared to last year.
“The event’s popularity is increasing every year. Participation from teachers is also up,” said Preethi Puram, media coordinator, FMS.
The money collected in the process will be used by the society for many social service activities. “We plan to use the money for Teach for India. The other head under which the money will be used is cleanliness drives,” Puram added.
