Amnesty International, the London-based human rights group, has urged India to pressure Sri Lanka on its human rights record ahead of the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting.

“India must raise concerns with Sri Lanka about its ongoing crackdown on dissent, repression and thousands of cases of disappearances and extra-judicial killings during and after the 2009 war,” Amnesty said in a statement.

Last year, India had voted in favour of a US-backed resolution for a probe, but it doesn’t want to be dragged directly into the mess.

India must stand firm in its demand for justice for the war-affected as it had signalled at the UN Human Rights Council in March this year when it made a strong call for an “independent and credible investigation”, Amnesty said.
