Humanities subjects open up not just your mind, but your hearts as well, enabling you to view the world on the basis of its cultural evolution. Today humanities courses open up a host of job opportunities and also help students develop critical and creative thinking skills. Delhi University offers a wide range of courses in humanities such as philosophy, history, political science etc for those who are interested in knowing more about different cultures, literature and political systems.

With a degree in humanities students can pursue careers in teaching, journalism, civil services and public relations. They can also work in NGOs, museums and art galleries. Other options include liberal arts and anthropology.

Several colleges in Delhi University offer courses in this field. Gargi College is perhaps the most sought-after women’s college located in South campus. Established in 1967, the college currently has 3,800 students and 200 faculty members on its rolls.

“We believe in an inter-disciplinary approach and teaching beyond the classroom. At Gargi College, students get a chance to explore themselves and their creativity. Our mission is to empower students in a holistic way so that they are able to face various challenges in life,” says Shashi Tyagi, principal, Gargi College.

In this academic year the college is offering BA (hons) in applied psychology, history, political science, philosophy, English, Hindi, Sanskrit and BA programme.

“Gargi College has evolved from being a centre of learning to a centre of excellence. Our students undertake research programmes and publish papers. We also organise workshops, seminars, conferences, panel discussions at both the national and international level. In addition to imparting quality education, we also sensitise our students to the needs of society through many outreach programmes,” says Tyagi.

The college is currently running an exchange programme with UK under UGC UKIERI (United Kingdom India Education Research Initiative).

One of the oldest colleges in DU, Indraprastha College for Women has over 3,000 students on its rolls. Located close to North campus, it offers a wide range of courses such as BA (hons) in English, Hindi, history, music, multimedia and mass communication, philosophy, political science, psychology, Sanskrit and BA programme.

This year the college plans to start two new courses — BA (hons) in geography and sociology. “These courses will enlarge the spectrum of humanities courses, the USP of the college. We are awaiting a final approval from Delhi University. The courses will begin as and when the approval is received,” says professor MM Yogi, coordinator of journalism and mass communication department, Indraprastha College for Women.

The college currently has an exchange programme with Deakin University, Melbourne, Australia.

“The college has a glorious and strong tradition of academics and service which has only grown over the years. We encourage freedom of expression which is reflected at all levels of the college community. At Indraprastha College for Women, students are the prime beneficiaries and they get a chance to embark on uncharted paths,” says Yogi.
The college organises remedial classes for students, if need be. Field trips, workshops, seminars and conferences are also organised on a regular basis.
