The results of the Mizoram High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) or Class 10 exam did not throw up any surprises. The outcome, though, caught the topper unawares.
The 2017 HSLC results, declared on Tuesday, registered an “expected” pass percentage of 72.17 – a marginal increase from the 71.17% last year.
Laldintluanga, a student of Mariana High School in eastern Mizoram’s Serchhip town, topped the exam with 474 out of 500 marks. A farmer’s son, he did what few before him had done – break the monopoly of Aizawl schools on top.
But the 16-year-old had no idea of having “exceeded the expectations” of his teachers and friends.
He was pursuing his passion – experimenting with his friend’s hair with an electric trimmer – when neighbours broke the news. It took Laldintluanga some time for the news to sink in.
“I have never really given my career a thought,” he said, appearing more focused on hair-styling.
Laldintluanga scored letter (minimum 80 out of 100) marks in all the subjects – English, mathematics, science, social science and Mizo.
Akash Jyoti Sahoo of St Paul’s HS School in state capital Aizawl was second with 473 marks and Janam Supriya, also from an Aizawl school, was third with 469 marks.
Poor connectivity was one of the reasons why students beyond Aizawl could not access their results in time. There were log-in issues too.
State education officials expressed satisfaction with the overall performance of 14,628 students who appeared for the Class 10 exam.
“This time, 73 schools in the state achieved 100% success but on the flip side, all the students of 26 schools failed,” an officer of Mizoram Board of School Education said, seeking anonymity.
This year’s Class 10 exam saw more girl candidates (7,683) than boys (6,945).
