Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) has released the schedule of the Provincial Civil Services (PCS-Mains)-2018 exam. The exam, formally known as Combined State/Upper Subordinate Services Exam 2018, will be conducted this year for the first time on a changed syllabus and question pattern. Another change that will be happening this time is that the exam will be completed in mere four days while earlier the examination used to take 18 to 20 days.
The PCS 2017 (mains), conducted last year, started from June 18, 2018, and ended on July 6, 2018. Owing to the wrong bundle of the question paper being opened at a centre, the July 6, 2018, exam was cancelled and re- conducted on July 7, 2018.
UPPSC secretary, Jagdish said, “The PCS (Mains)-2018 will commence on June 17, 2019 and continue till on June 21, 2019. The exams will be conducted at the Prayagraj and Lucknow centres. The first session of the examination will be held from 9.30 am to 12:30 pm while the second session will be held from 2 pm to 5 pm.”
As per the schedule, the exam of General Hindi will be conducted in the first shift while the exam of Essay writing will be conducted in the second shift on June 17, 2019. On June 18, 2019, the first session will witness examination of General Studies (GS)-1 and the second session will have examination of GS paper-2. Likewise, the first session on June 19, 2019, will have of GS paper-3 exam and the second session will witness examination of GS paper-4.
Then after a one-day gap on June 20, the fourth day of the examination will continue on June 21, 2019 with the first session witnessing exam of optional subject paper- 1 and second session will have optional subject paper- 2.
As per a notification issued by UPPSC secretary, the commission reserves the right to change this examination schedule owing to any unexpected circumstances. This time the number of question papers of GS has been increased from two to four while that of optional subject has been reduced to one but with two different question papers which shall be conducted in two sessions.
The change in PSC (Mains)-2018 examination pattern closely resembles the civil services (Indian Administrative Services-IAS Mains) examination pattern of UPSC. The syllabus prepared for PCS (Mains)-2018 is very similar to civil services (Mains) exam. This similarity between syllabus and pattern of these two popular exams is expected to benefit aspirants.
UPPSC has also informed candidates that they will retain the roll number allotted to them in the preliminary examination during the Mains.
“The GS question papers will be of 200 marks each. Since there are four of them, they will amount to a total of 800 marks. The marks for Optional Paper-1 and Optional Paper-2 will be of 200 marks each, thus, totaling to 400 marks. General Hindi and Essay question papers will be of 150 marks each”, informed Jagdish.
