More than 82% students passed the uccha madhyamik or Class 12 board examination, results announced by the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) showed on Friday, a slight improvement over last year’s 81.22%.

“A total of 804,895 students appeared for the exams and 663,516 passed,” the council’s president Mahua Das said.

However, Das put the pass percentage of the West Bengal HS Result 2018 at 83.75.

More than 8,25,330 students registered for the exam, popularly known as higher secondary, conducted from March 27 to April 11.

Granthan Sengupta, a humanities student of Jalpaiguri Zilla School, scored 99.2% in the exams to emerge as the topper.

Only a few students from Kolkata featured among the 80 in the top 10 positions in the higher secondary exams.

The trend was same in the Class 10 board results, announced on June 6, in which out of the 56, who occupied the top 10 positions, only two candidates were from the state capital.

Das said out of every 100 candidates, 53 were girls and 47 were boys. In as many as 18 out of 23 districts, the rate of success of girls was higher than that of boys, she said.

Girls surpassed the number of boys last year as well. West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee last year credited her pet “Kanyashree” welfare project for encouraging more girl to continue studies at least till Class 12.

In two districts - East Midnapore and Kalimpong - the pass percentage was more than 90.

The results were declared 58 days after the exams. Question papers were set in 166 subjects.

Students can check their results on the council’s official website wbbse.org as well as on wbresults.nic.in, indiaresults.com, schools9.com, exametc.com and knowyourresult.com.
