In 2017, 7 candidates were competing for Orai assembly constituency seat. Orai was one of 312 seats won by the Bharatiya Janata Party. It was a one way contest with Bharatiya Janata Party's Gauri Shankar comfortably winning the election defeating Samajwadi Party's Mahendra Singh by a huge margin of 78,879 votes.
98.7% of the total votes were casted to top three candidates. Bharatiya Janata Party's Gauri Shankar grabbed a total of 1,40,485 votes, while Samajwadi Party's Mahendra Singh got 61,606 votes. Bahujan Samaj Party's candidate Vijay Chaudhari bagged 57,541 votes to finish at the third place. The top three parties registered 53.4%, 23.4% and 21.9% respectively.
In Uttar Pradesh Assembly election 2012, Samajwadi Party's Dayashankar beat Bahujan Samaj Party's Satyendra Pratap by 7,133 votes.
