Gangotri comes under the Uttarkashi district and it is one of the 70 Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly Constituencies . People of Gangotri voted for Uttarakhand Assembly Election 2022 on February 14 and the result was declared on March 10.
In 2017, the Gangotri assembly seat had 81,692 registered voters. Of the, 42,499 were male and 39,193 were female voters. 1.1% of votes were casted for NOTA.
In the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly Election 2017, Gangotri constituency had 9 candidates for assembly seat contention. Gangotri was one of 57 seats won by the Bharatiya Janata Party. Bharatiya Janata Party's Gopal Singh Rawat won the election by upstaging Indian National Congress's Vijaypal Singh Sajwan by a margin of 9,610 votes.
The top three candidates split 93.7% of votes between them. Bharatiya Janata Party's Gopal Singh Rawat secured a total of 25,683 votes, while Indian National Congress's Vijaypal Singh Sajwan got 16,073 votes. Independent candidate Suratram Nautiyal bagged 9,491 votes to finish at the third place. The top three parties got 46.9%, 29.4% and 17.3% respectively.
In Uttarakhand Assembly election 2012, Indian National Congress's Vijaipal Singh Sajwan outperformed Bharatiya Janata Party's Gopal Singh Rawat by 7,023 votes.
