Love is complicated. And a growing number of young celebrity couples can vouch for it. Several Hollywood celeb couples such as Selena Gomez-Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus-Liam Hemsworth, Katy Perry-John Mayer and Rihanna-Chris Brown are in on-off relationships. Closer home, actors Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor reportedly broke up a few years ago before getting back together this year.

Cause and effect
Reasons for these boomerang relationships could be many. Could it be because they live in a small world with the same set of people and very little options to date? Or a host of other issues such as a lack of commitment due to hectic careers involving a lot of travelling. Possible insecurity of working with glamorous co-stars may cause breakups too. “We often forget that young celeb couples are also youngsters. They tend to go through a breakup-makeup phase because they are in their formative years. They are still finding their feet and trying to make a career. In between this, they often feel disconnected with their partner. But later they may find a way to be with each other,” says Samir Parik of Fortis hospital.

Career over love?
Also, ambition and restlessness often drive couples away from each other, even if they love each other. “Often celebs are very ambitious with chaotic schedules. Amid this, they often face adjustment issues and are not willing to compromise on their career for love. So, even though they’re in love, they end up breaking up as ego issues crop up,” says psychologist Sayara Ansari.

Celebville is also a tiny
place on the planet where you often bump into your ex or hear about their lives through the media. Often reading about your ex or meeting them can conjure up latent feelings for each other. “Like anybody else, celebs also need relationships, preferably with someone who will understand their demanding career. Also, celeb relationships are scrutinised so much in the public space that it can cause a rift,” says Achal Bhagat of Apollo hospital.
