Even though she has had plenty of professional success, Deepika Padukone’s personal life has, somehow, always been the talk of the town.
Recently, the grapevine was abuzz that she is set to tie the knot with her alleged boyfriend Ranveeer Singh. The actor clears the air, and talks about why she doesn’t want to rush into marriage, her bond with Priyanka Chopra, and more.
Your personal life — in other words, your equation with Ranveer — is always in news.
Actually, it has been a while since someone said or wrote anything. I have not read anything for quite some time. But even when that happens, it doesn’t bother me.
Ranveer said that you hold "special significance" in his life.
Has he? Tell Ranveer to say all these things to me. Why is he telling the media?
How would you describe your equation with him?
He is a special person. I have known him now for two-three years, and have always maintained that Ranveer is a very special person. He has the ability to make people laugh and feel special. We are constantly surrounded by doubt and negativity, and today, people like him are lesser in number. He should retain this, since that’s the greatest quality he has. I wish he never loses it. I keep telling him that.
But reports say that you are preparing to tie the knot in 2015.
No, that’s not true. I think there’s a time and a place for everything. I don’t think I am ready for that phase of my life yet. Marriage is a very beautiful thing. It’s not something I want to rush into or something that I ever want to regret. I feel more marriages are crumbling today. They are breaking at the drop of the hat. I am nobody to comment on what other people are going through, but it’s sad to see this.
Is it difficult to be in a long-term relationship nowadays?
In the family that I come from, or the way I have been brought up, I have seen marriages work. And I am hoping to find that relationship and that kind of equation with a man, so that I will be happy with for the rest of my life. For me, marriage is sacred and something that is for keeps. You have to find the right person. The feelings and emotions have to be correct.
You haven’t even started shooting for your next with Sanjay Leela Bhansali (also starring Ranveer Singh and Priyanka Chopra) and rumours of an alleged rivalry with Priyanka have already begun doing the rounds.
I am looking forward to working with her. I don’t have a say in which actor Sanjay sir is going to cast, but I am glad he’s chosen Priyanka because she is a fantastic actor and my friend. Women don’t have issues with each other all the time. I have heard a lot of stories (about heroines not getting along), but I feel that the perception is changing, and it’s no longer the reality.
What kind of an equation do you share with Priyanka?
I have known Priyanka since I was a nobody; she was one of the top actresses at that time. I knew her through common friends when I wasn’t even in the modelling industry. We have gone out together. I have been to her house. Even today, I am very comfortable around her.
Of late, a lot of actors — including you — have been praising each other on public platforms. What’s the deal with this camaraderie?
I haven’t been brought up to believe that such things require a motive. It’s such an exciting time for movies and I don’t think there is any space or place for negativity. If Finding Fanny does well, and all the girls came for the screening and tweeted about it, there’s obviously some truth to it.
Your recent release, yet again, got a great opening at the box office. You are being looked upon as the number one heroine in Bollywood now.
For me, these are all intangible things. For me, it’s important to enjoy what I do. I am ready to take risks, experiment and be stunned by a particular script. I am ready to go through these experiences. And these are the only things that keep me going.
