Thank your stars
Actors are known to be extremely generous towards their staff; we’re talking financial aid, expensive gifts and free guest appearances.Updated: Aug 21, 2013 15:31 IST
The starlet Neetu Chandra recently lent more than just a helping hand when her maid’s daughter, Seema, was getting married. “I’d asked my maid about the preparations, and she told me that it may not happen because she was facing financial problems. It really bothered me, so I wanted to help,” says Neetu, who helped the maid not only with money, but also with home appliances apparently worth lakhs. Neetu adds, “I told my maid that since I don’t have a sister, I’d like to help Seema like one. I gifted her whatever she’d require to begin a married life. My mother was proud of me, and I too felt nice doing it.”
A flat as a wedding gift
Neetu isn’t, of course, the only charitable person in Bollywood. Top actors have been known to help out their staff on personal and professional levels. They’ve also showered valuable and expensive gifts upon them. A few years ago, Shah Rukh Khan famously bought a flat in Bandra as a wedding gift for his bodyguard, Yaseen, where he could live with his family. The latter had been staying with the actor at his home, Mannat, until then.
Amitabh Bachchan’s make-up man, Deepak Sawant, has worked with him for over 35 years now. So when Sawant produced a Bhojpuri film called Gangadevi, his employer made a guest appearance in it. Jaya Bachchan too was seen in the movie; and neither of them charged for it.
Salman Khan has the reputation of being one of the more generous stars in the industry. Apart from running a charity, Salman is also known to take special care of his staff. Recently, he gifted a puppy named Myman to his trusted bodyguard, Shera. Of course, he also roped in Shera for an appearance in a song in his film Bodyguard (2011). Their bond is believed to be so strong that Salman even declined lucrative offers from other security agencies, opting to wear the uniform of his personal bodyguard’s agency in the film. Again, when Katrina Kaif’s hairstylist Promila Hunter produced an animated film, Main Krishna Hoon, she did a cameo in it, and even took time out to promote the film. She too didn’t charge for it. Hrithik Roshan too acted in the film, which was directed by Rajiv S Ruia.
After a successful run at the box office with hits like 3 Idiots (2009), Golmaal 3 (2010), Bodyguard and Ra.One (2011), Kareena Kapoor went on a spending spree. Only, it wasn’t for herself. The actor bought gizmos like iPhones and iPads for her make-up man, Ritesh Naik and hairstylist Pompy Hans.
