Chelsea vs Manchester City, Community Shield: Sergio Aguero double powers City to win - as it happened
A goal in each half by Argentina striker Sergio Aguero was enough to give defending Premier League champions Manchester City a comfortable 2-0 win over FA Cup winners Chelsea. Aguero also joined the likes of Thierry Henry and Frank Lampard to have scored 200 goals for a single club in English football. Chelsea under new manager Maurizio Sarri never looked like troubling City and have a huge task ahead of them to recapture former glory. City, on the other hand look brilliant and will be favourites to land the league title again. Chelsea vs Manchester City as it happened:
Match summary
Manchester City look a well-oiled machine and new addition Riyad Mahrez has proved that he fits into Pep Guardiola’s system. The youngsters looked good, the experienced heads did their bit and Aguero, while not at his clinical best, still scored twice. As for Chelsea, they showed glimpses of what Maurizio Sarri expects of them. However, they are still struggling to adapt back to a 4-3-3 formation and sorely miss both N’Golo Kante and Eden Hazard at this point. But one would suspect that even with the two of them back, the Blues will likely not be Premier League title contenders this season.
City win the Charity Shield
Full time and a Sergio Aguero brace is enough for Manchester City to beat Chelsea 2-0 and win the FA Community Shield. That was a thoroughly dominant performance from Pep Guardiola’s side.
21:21 hrs ISTAdded time
4 minutes of injury time have been added on.
21:14 hrs ISTCity playing ball
City are passing the ball around with the kind of nonchalant air that would make most teams embarrassed. Chelsea have obviously given up at this stage.
21:07 hrs ISTFoden goes off
Brahim Diaz replaces Phil Foden - someone who, alongside Hudson-Odoi, came to India last year and won the U-17 World Cup for England.
21:00 hrs ISTMountain to climb
Chelsea have twenty minutes to score two goals and take the game to a penalty shootout - no extra-time in this game, remember. At this rate, them scoring even one is an achievement.
20:56 hrs ISTPedro comes close
Pedro has looked a bit lively in the second half and gets into a good shooting position inside the box but fires wide.
20:54 hrs ISTChelsea ring in the changes
Chelsea make two changes: Willian and Danny Drinkwater come on for Hudson-Odoi and Fabregas. Undoubtedly Sarri’s looking to add some legs to this side in order to avoid being overrun.
20:50 hrs ISTAguero doubles lead
GOAL! A wonderful counter-attack sees Chelsea’s defence caught unaware and Aguero is on hand to slot one past Caballero’s near post. Game’s all but over now.
20:47 hrs ISTChelsea attack
Chelsea seem to be growing into the game a bit now, with Azpilicueta marauding down the right flank only to overhit the cross. Although if they continue to look this disjointed, question marks over their formation will remain.
20:41 hrs ISTAguero misses a sitter
My word Aguero, what have you done?! Luiz is sleeping as the Argentine runs past him and with only Caballero to beat, Aguero rounds him but somehow only hits the side netting.
20:39 hrs ISTJorginho struggling
Jorginho, the man who chose to sign for Chelsea over City this summer, hasn’t looked at his best thus far. Mind you, the presence of N’Golo Kante in that midfield would help Chelsea considerably but the Frenchman is yet to rejoin the side.
20:36 hrs ISTWe are ready to roll
City get things going in the second half, Chelsea need to keep more of the ball this half
20:20 hrs ISTEnd of the first half; Chelsea 0-1 Manchester City
City scored the first goal, Chelsea have kept pressing, their finishing has not been close to what it should be. Sarri might fire a few rockets.
20:15 hrs ISTChelsea fumble again
They tried to break free, City defenders close them down and Chelsea lose the ball, once again. It has really been a tired performance from Sarri’s boys
20:12 hrs ISTCity oozing class
They do not all the fisr-choice players at their disposal, but the Premier League champions look silken even with soaked shirts
20:05 hrs ISTGood play by Chelsea
Sarri’s men finally have something to say about the match. Pedro and Morata play a lovely ball between them and then pass on the ball to Hudson-Odoi who is released on the left. Shot taken but the ball is well over Bravo to be hassled.
19:57 hrs ISTChelsea appear
Morata got the ball, he jinks in, and then attempts to shoot, but the ball is well clear and Bravo can watch it sail by
19:56 hrs ISTSane breaks free
The German gets the ball, bullets past the defence, Chelsea not quite very tight, but Caballero rushes forward slides and collects the ball.
19:55 hrs ISTCity all over Chelsea
Mahrez whips one ball in, Luiz boots it away, Chelsea seem to be chasing the game at the moment. Sarri is not too hassled at the moment.
19:47 hrs ISTGOAL!!!! Aguero scores
Lovely play from City, keeping the ball, and now Foden gets the ball to Aguero who calmly finds the bottom corner to give Man City the lead
19:43 hrs IST8 minutes: Hudson-Odoi surfaces
The 17-year-old gets the ball, cuts in but then loses the ball. He should be one free spirit on the pitch today
19:42 hrs ISTJittery Chelsea
Sarri’s side is struggling to keep the ball and their passes are not quite penetrative enough, they are chasing the game at the moment.
19:37 hrs ISTSane looking sharp
The German is making impressive runs, he even took a shot at goal, but blasted it wide. He was left out of the German world cup squad, remember?
19:32 hrs ISTChelsea get us rolling
And just as we blink, there is a foul, it is buzzing, it is sweltering
19:24 hrs ISTTeams await
Both sets of players await in the tunnel, and out they go, Wembley is buzzing at the moment, the mystique of the unknown
19:07 hrs ISTThe new boss speaks
Well, Sarri has never been to Wembley before. It is all building up, folks.
18:54 hrs IST"The Premier League is hard. But to be a coach here is very exciting."
