Like previous years, Gurgaon residents are facing water crisis this summer too.

To avoid people from wasting potable water, the authorities have decided to act tough.

Acting on this, the Haryana Urban Development Authority (Huda) has fined 12,000 people in the last four months under the Environment Protection Act and Water prevention Act.

The defaulters were penalised for using potable water to wash cars and terraces, maintain green belt areas etc.

The city is already facing shortage of 20 million gallons of water per day. The authorities feel that if residents stop wasting water, the shortage can be easily compensated.

“On the one hand, residents complain that they don’t have enough water supply to meet their daily requirement. But on the other, people can be seen washing cars and terraces,” said Meera Balachandran, a resident of Sector 40.

Huda spokesperson Sarvesh Joon, who is also handling the project, said, “We are conducting surprise checks. If we come across any resident wasting water, we fine them. The regular defaulters are penalised more.”

The authorities can challan any resident or commercial unit for wasting potable water. People can be fined R200 for the first offence, which can go up to Rs.5,000.

In severe cases, the authorities may also disconnect the water connection.

But with the mercury touching 40 degrees, residents say they have been compelled to depend upon water tankers.

While residents of Sectors 51 to 57 rely on groundwater, people in other parts of the city depend on supply provided by Huda.

“Water should be supplied three hours a day. People residing in apartments get 24-hour water supply whereas those living in independent houses don’t,” said Nidhi Mittal, resident of Sector 5.
