A 60-year-old housekeeping staff member was arrested for allegedly molesting a girl at an upscale housing society in Sector 90 on Sunday evening.

The accused allegedly molested the 11-year-old girl while she was in the elevator. The girl, police said, is a student at a reputed private school in the city.

The family said that the incident took place on Sunday afternoon at around 3.30 pm when the girl and her mother had returned from a nearby market by a cab. The mother had sent the girl back to pay money to the driver who was not carrying change.

“We had returned from the market, and while paying cash to the driver, he said he did not have change. My daughter and I went up to our apartment, and I gave the money to my daughter to hand over to the driver, who had parked the cab at the gate. She returned within few minutes, in a state of shock,” mother said.

The victim later narrated her ordeal. She told her parents that while travelling in the lift, the accused started asking her about her family. It was at this point of time that he started touching her inappropriately. Although she resisted he did not stop, said the mother of the victim.

The parents later lodged a complaint against the accused at the women police station. In their complaint, the parents of the minor claimed that the accused had ‘touched the girl inappropriately’ and warned her not to tell anyone about the incident.

Based on the parent’s complaint, an FIR was lodged against the accused under Section 8 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

“This is the first such incident reported from our society. The family members of the accused had come to us requested us take our complaint back. My daughter was in a state of shock. How can someone do this with a small child?” the father of the victim said.

The girl’s family also alleged that the family of the accused has been known for their recent involvement in a theft case, in which their daughter-in-law was accused of stealing jewellery from an apartment.

“The accused was arrested, produced before a court and sent to jail. The statement of minor was recorded under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) before a duty magistrate,” said Yashwant Singh, inspector, Sector 10A police station, where the case was registered.

The victim’s counselling was carried out by the child welfare committee(CWC) on Monday. “The girl was counselled by us on Monday evening. She was visibly traumatised,” Shakuntala Dhull, chairperson, CWC, said.
