A 42-year-old man was arrested after he tried to rob a driver and run away with his vehicle.
The man, hailing from Uttar Pradesh, has been sent to 14 days of judicial custody.
The incident took place on Friday night when Panchal Shikarim, a native of West Bengal who works as a driver in Palam Vihar, was going towards Delhi.
At around 11pm, he stopped the car at Iffco Chowk to check the air pressure of the car’s tube.
Meanwhile, Vipin Singh, the accused, sneaked in the backseat of the car.
The moment Shikarim entered the car, Singh caught hold of his neck with a rope and told him to hand over all his money and the car keys, else he would kill him.
Not losing his nerve, Shikarim, the driver, picked up an iron rod kept near his seat and landed a few blows on Singh’s head.
“The driver showed courage and did not move. Instead, he banged Singh’s head with an iron rod. Singh tried to run away but daily commuters waiting at Iffco Chowk caught hold of him,” SHO Praveen Kumar said.
Singh, a native of Baghpat, had come to his meet his uncle on Holi.
“Singh has been involved in a few cases of fights. We are investigating if he has involvement in any other case,” Kumar said.
DCP (crime) Maheshwar Dayal said: “The driver immediately called the police control room and our team reached the spot and arrested the accused.”
“We are proud of such people who have courage and strength to protect themselves," he added.
