Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) and district administration officials observed Raahgiri Day, an event which promotes sustainable transport, on Sunday in the backdrop of awareness campaigns for MCG elections.
With less than a week left for the MCG elections, authorities are using public events such as Raahgiri to ensure a high turnout for the elections.
Addressing residents who had gathered at DLF Phase 4 near Galleria market, Gurgaon deputy commissioner Vinay Pratap Singh stated the importance of making every vote count during the civic polls.
“To derive the biggest benefit of being in a democratic country, we, as residents, need to come forward and vote in the MCG elections. Voting should also be conducted without fear or favour,” Singh said.
Officials have also roped in Bollywood actors and sports personalities for generating awareness for the elections as well.
MCG officials have started circulating video messages from Olympians Sakshi Malik, Deepa Malik, Akhil Kumar and TV actor Surender Pal all over social media. They will seen conveying messages on the importance of voting and urging voters to flock to polling booths on voting day.
MCG officials are also conducting an awareness programme for the elections with actor Rajkumar Rao.
MCG officials confirmed that they are also trying to rope in actor Randeep Hooda for similar awareness campaigns.
In the first-ever MCG elections in 2011, voter turnout was only 55%. Authorities are determined to do better this time around.
“We want to ensure that there is the maximum turnout for the MCG elections. By involving celebrities in awareness campaigns, we are trying to draw voters to polling booths,” SS Rohilla, MCG spokesperson, said.
Approximately, 5.57 lakh voters are registered for the forthcoming elections. A total 202 candidates are in fray for the polls.
The outcome of the polls will also be known on September 24.
