The city police have arrested three members of an autolifting gang, who would allegedly sold luxury cars stolen from Delhi-NCR in Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh at throwaway prices.

On being questioned, the accused revealed that they would steal expensive vehicles on demand from prospective buyers.

“They would contact vehicle receivers after eyeing an SUV, strike a deal and sell it. A Toyota Fortuner that costs between Rs.25 lakh and Rs.30 lakh was sold for Rs.4 lakh and a Swift Dzire that costs Rs.7-8 lakh was sold for just Rs.1 lakh,” a police officer said.

Those arrested have been identified as Ali Sher alias Imran (28) from Azamgarh district in Uttar Pradesh, Saleem (26) from Jalna district in Maharashtra and Vinod (32) from Noida. According to a police officer, the trio was involved in as many as two dozen auto theft cases in Delhi-NCR.

A police officer said that the three have confessed that they used the engine control module (ECM) code breaker software to unlock luxury cars after breaking the side window pane of the vehicle. The Chinese software is easily available in the market for Rs.1 lakh.

“The thieves no longer use methods such as duplicate keys. They have also become tech savvy. They now break the car window, deactivate the steering and connect the ECM with the Chinese software and change the password,” said an officer investigating the case.

The three were arrested by crime unit five of the Gurgaon police near Industrial Model Township, Manesar, 30 km from Gurgaon. A local court has sent them to five-day judicial custody.

“The three have confessed that the two SUVs that were recently stolen from Sushant Lok and Sector 10 were taken by them,” the officer said.
