The Congress on Thursday said BJP governments in the Centre and in Haryana should deliver their promises to farmers. Senior Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala, who addressed a rally in Sohna on Thursday, said the government should ensure that the fear psychosis being created in the country is stopped.
“BJP governments in the Centre and the state should fulfil their poll promises of implementation of ‘cost +50%’ rates for farm produce and waive farmers’ loans. Otherwise, the Congress will waive the loans on forming the government in Haryana,” Surjewala said.
He made the comments while addressing a farmers’ protest in Sohna organised by the Haryana Kisan Khet Majdoor Congress and the Haryana Krishak Samaj.
Attacking the BJP, the Haryana MLA said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had promised the implementation of the Swaminathan Commission, ensuring at least 50% profit on the average cost of agricultural production while fixing minimum support prices (MSP) for crops. However, the promise was never delivered, he said.
He also raised the Mandsaur firing incident and said the killing of farmers had exposed the “real anti-farmer face” of the BJP. He also said that a majority of small and marginal farmers are under severe debt and committing suicide due to the faulty policies of the BJP government.
Surjewala also submitted a memorandum to the district administration demanding waiver of farm loans and implementation of the Swaminathan Commission report.
The protest was also attended by former minister Bachan Singh Arya, former MLA Radhey Shyam Sharma, former CM Rao Birender Singh’s grandson Rao Arjun Singh, president of Haryana Kisan Khet Majdoor Congress Bhupender Singh Phogat, president of Haryana Mahila Congress Sumitra Chauhan, president of Haryana Krishak Samaj Ishwar Nain, former Haryana Youth Congress president Sanjay Chhokar and other Congress leaders.
