For most women, the role of a house help/maid/bai in their lives is crucial. Some will say, even more than husbands! With Diwali round the corner, ladies in NCR are leading by example when it comes to adding a dose of happiness to their maids’ lives, this festive season. With practical gifting options on their minds, they’re planning a lot more than just sweets.

Roopali Agarwal, a makeup artist from Noida, says the festival is all about spreading cheer. “People spend on themselves, but those working for us need encouragement. I’ve bought gold earrings for my help and a 32-inch LCD TV for my driver. They truly deserve it for all the hard work they put in for us all year,” says Agarwal.

Anupama Purohit, a Gurgaon resident, believes in gifting functional things, like a water purifier. “What good would a tea set or a casserole do for them?” asks Purohit, adding, “The people that work for us also need clean water to drink. But a necessity such as water purifiers is not their priority, when feeding their family is their biggest concern. They also realise that pure water is important, but their salaries are spent on bigger priorities despite them often acquiring water-borne diseases,” she says.

Want to do something that makes your house help’s day? Gurgaon resident Richa Agarwal urges people to buy movie tickets for them. “I’m sure she’ll love it, as they never get to go for such outings. If she has kids, an animation film would be a good idea.”

Another Gurgaon resident, Namrata Verma Kalia says that reliable house helps are the backbone of our Indian society, and without them it’s difficult to manage our jobs. Talking about what she’s gifting to them, Kalia says, “One of our maids asked for a juicer mixer grinder and the other, for a mobile phone. Our ironing lady didn’t ask for anything, but she has an 8-year-old child, so I thought of gifting the kid a stationery set with a school bag.”

Presents that encourage one towards attaining education or learning life skills is also Sneha Gaurav’s idea of gifting. The resident of Ghaziabad is giving notebooks and stationery to her house help, and also helping her set up an RD (Recurring deposit) account.

“My mother would do this for her maids, and I just took a slice of inspiration from her. We gave the house help an increment this year and the savings from the RD account would only help her in the education of her child, and in managing her finances better,” says Gaurav.
