In a special drive against drunk driving, the city police fined 226 people and arrested two men from MG Road on Saturday evening.
A contingent of 150 police officers, including 50 women constables, took part in the drive that ran well past Saturday midnight.
The drive, however, also led to a huge traffic jam on the MG Road stretch, also called mall mile. The two arrested men were produced in a court on Sunday and got bail.
“A massive drive was conducted at MG road on Saturday evening. Around 50 women cops also took part in the campaign. During the campaign, 226 drivers were challaned for drunk driving. Two men were arrested as it was detected that they had consumed more than 100 ml alcohol. We have also seized their vehicles,” a traffic police officer said.
The offenders were fined anywhere from Rs 100 to Rs 2,000.
Explaining how the drive was conducted, a police officer said once the traffic police stopped a vehicle, the driver was made to go through a breathalyzer test to ascertain the amount of alcohol in the breath.
If it came out to be more than 30ml, then the authorities took a picture of the driver and issued a challan.
If a driver is found to be excessively drunk (100ml), he/she is detained and produced in court. According to provisions, a driver can be fined Rs 2,000 and face up to three months in prison.
“We want to sensitise the people about traffic laws. Such drives ensure the safety and security of city commuters. We have been keeping an eye on traffic rules violators,” said a senior traffic police officer.
“With such huge numbers of violators, people can understand that police are working hard to control traffic offences in the city,” the officer added.
