The bus, that belonged to the f Dronacharya College of Engineering, Farrukhnagar, had just left a fuel station in Sector 44, after filling CNG, when it caught fire. The incident took place on the Sector 43/44 dividing road near the Huda City Centre junction.

“Upon seeing the flames, the bus driver and conductor immediately vacated the vehicle. We are continuing our probe into the matter,” said Satyawan Samriwal, fire safety officer.

As per fire department officials, a call was made to the Sector 29 fire brigade, located less than a kilometre from the spot, at 5.58 am, by the bus driver Rajbir. Subsequently, two fire tenders were sent to the spot.

Despite reaching the accident spot within five minutes, fire department officials found the entire vehicle engulfed in flames. Two fire tenders, one discharging water and the other foam, were used to douse the flames. It took officials more than 10 minutes to douse the fire.

“The bus was on its way to pick up students. Somehow, in between, there were some complications, which possibly led to the fire. The driver could foresee that something was wrong and stepped out in time. Thankfully, no one was injured. The exact cause will be known in due course of time. We are trying to find out what started the fire. For the past 20 years, our buses have been running smoothly and nothing has happened before,” said Sri Krishan Yadav, Dean Academics, Dronacharya College of Engineering.

Fire department officials are suspecting that a possible CNG leakage could have been the cause of the fire.

On January 31, 2017, a school bus carrying 35 students and four staff members to a private school had also caught fire near the Huda City Centre Metro station. Although no injuries were reported in the incident, the bus was badly burnt.
