Awakening to the security threat faced by scores of commercial establishments in the city, the police launched a bomb detection and disposal squad on Thursday.
Soon, a security audit team (SAT) of the crime investigation department will begin mock combing exercises in office complexes and nearly three dozen malls that dot the city’s skyline.
Inaugurating the squad, Gurgaon police commissioner Alok Mittal said the team has already covered 17 malls and found certain major lapses in the security arrangements.
“The lapses include dysfunctional CCTV cameras, unskilled staff at the CCTV monitoring rooms, unmanned entry and exits, absence of metal detectors, lack of CCTV cameras in parking lots etc. Women security guards are often absent letting women visitors enter complexes without being frisked,” Mittal said.
SAT will check security measures in all malls and shopping arenas and the exercise will be extended to office complexes in DLF Cyber City in the next phase, he added.
The complexes — which are the hub of IT and BPO firms — are often credited for lending the area the sobriquet of the ‘Manhattan of Delhi-NCR’.
The commercial hub houses the offices of nearly 300 Fortune500 companies besides hundreds of other multi-national companies.
Gurgaon’s five-star hotels, hospitals and schools will also fall into the security audit ambit.
The audit will include mock security audits, followed by regular sensitisation of the complexes’ security staff and visitors.
Mittal, who had initiated a similar exercise at the time of the 2010 Commonwealth Games during his earlier stint as the Gurgaon joint commissioner of police, claimed the renewed security exercise will be strictly enforced. For, this, he said, the respective DCPs of the three districts under the Gurgaon police commissionerate — East, West and South — will be responsible.
Vulnerable government complexes like the Mini Secretariat and the district court complex will also be covered, Mittal told HT.
The SAT and bomb disposable squad has latest equipment like the telescopic manipulator which can diffuse bombs from a distance of 15 feet and water-jet destructors to diffuse bombs.
