Almost three years after a 12-year-old girl committed suicide after being allegedly punished in school, a Gurgaon court has summoned the school teacher and principal in the case.
Ashima Yadav, a student of Class 7 at Euro International School in Sector 45, had hanged herself from the ceiling fan at her home in Wazirabad village on July 25, 2010, a day after she was punished in school.
According to the criminal complaint filed by the victim's father, Sajjan Singh, the teacher repeatedly slapped Ashima after a girl in the class complained that the water in her bottle was mixed with something.
The classmate had complained that she felt drowsy after drinking the water from Ashima's bottle.
"She was then taken to the principal where she was humiliated and threatened to be expelled," Singh, a property dealer, submitted in the court.
The court of judicial magistrate Sukhpreet Singh, in a recent order, summoned the duo on May 5. The school so far has been denying the child was punished at all.
"It was a very minor issue in the classroom that was settled by the teacher concerned. We have conducted our own enquiries and never found any lapses," said Satyavir Yadav, chairman, Euro International School.
The victim's father, who has an infant son now, told HT, "She was my only child then. Without ascertaining the facts, my child was humiliated. She had no reason to take the drastic step as she was doing very well both academically and in sports."
He said he was pained as the school didn't even care to even tender an apology. The court's step took a long time to come as earlier a Gurgaon court had dismissed Singh's complaint.
"The girl's father persisted, so we filed a review petition. The girl would have been alive today if the teachers were a little more sensitive," said Vishal Gupta, Singh's counsel.
