Delhi-based gang robbing MG Road, Iffco Chowk commuters rounded up

A gang of robbers from Delhi that allegedly targeted commuters from Iffco Chowk and MG Road after offering them a lift has been busted, police said. Police arrested one of its alleged members from Sanjay Colony near Bhati Mines in Delhi. According to the police, the gang has four to five members, who hail from Delhi and are listed as bad characters by the city’s police.

The man arrested on Wednesday, Padam alias Rahul, allegedly told the police that the gang would spot commuters looking for lifts at the busy Iffco Chowk and MG Road areas and offer them seats in their vehicle.

“Two to three gang members already present in the car would take the commuter to an isolated place and rob them of their valuables, phone and cash. Anyone who resisted was beaten up,” said Deepak Saharan, DCP, east.

Police said they used different vehicles to commit the crimes, sometimes borrowing or hiring them. The police have been able to identify seven to eight incidents carried out by this gang.

ACP, crime, Ranbir Singh said other gang members have been identified and will be nabbed soon.

“All of them are from Delhi and have several cases registered against them,” Singh said.

In another success, the anti-snatching cell of the Gurgaon police, led by sub-inspector Sandeep Kumar, arrested two men hailing from UP who were allegedly involved in over 30 cases of theft, snatching, robbery and vehicle lifting. The two used to shift their residences frequently and have already spent time in jail.

A police team arrested Jai Solanki alias Ganja, from Kanshi Ram Nagar, and his associate Gyani alias Bauna, from Agra. Police said the two were involved in over 20 cases that include theft of 10 to 12 cars, snatching and similar offences in Delhi, Gurgaon and Faridabad.

“These are hardened criminals who make a living through crime. They are very sharp and keep changing their location every 15 to 20 days. They would always be on the lookout for targets and carried out crimes where shops and victims were in an isolated place, offering them a chance to escape,” said Saharan.

The two have served time in prison earlier and some members of their gang are already lodged in Bhondsi jail, police said.
