The crucial ballistics report that would have helped solve the mystery around the deaths of a Delhi Police officer and his live-in partner will not come out till at least a week.
The report assumed larger significance after the post-mortem report on Sunday further confounded the matter. “Reaching any conclusion will not be appropriate. The ballistics report will be out in a week’s time,” Gurgaon police commissioner Alok Mittal told HT.
Badrish Dutt, an officer attached to the Delhi Police’s elite special cell, and his live-in partner Geeta Sharma — a private detective — were found dead at Sharma’s second-floor flat in Ardee City on Saturday morning. Both had one bullet wound each. While Dutt was shot in the temple, Sharma had a bullet injury in her head.
Both were shot by Dutt’s service pistol found in Sharma’s lap. Initially, it was claimed that Sharma first shot Dutt and then turned the gun on herself.
But the autopsy report, which came out on Sunday, baffled investigators. It said the bullet hole in Sharma’s head suggested it entered from her head and exited from the chin. The autopsy also pointed out a third bullet contrary to earlier theories that only two bullets were fired.
The bullet mark on Sharma’s body suggested she could not have killed Dutt first. There were no explanations for the third bullet. By analysing the gunpowder residues found on the bodies, the ballistics report will clear who shot whom first and the mystery of the third bullet.
According to the autopsy report, the shooting took place around 1am on Friday night. There were no external injuries which cleared doubts about any struggle before the shooting.
It was claimed that the two had been living together for the past over one year. Their relationship had turned sour after Sharma was jailed for forging letters from the Union home ministry.
