Eight condominiums in Gurgaon to have household waste treatment units soon

The Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) is going to introduce household waste treatment units to segregate solid waste generated in the kitchens of eight upscale condominiums.
The initiative is significant as the solid waste treatment plant in Bandhwari, along the Gurgaon-Faridabad expressway, has been shut since June 2013. Garbage from Gurgaon and Faridabad is currently dumped here without treatment.
A meeting of MCG officials and residents of Windsor Court, Regency Park-2, Hamilton Court, Central Park 2, Wellington, Laburnum, Silver Oaks and Ridgewood will take place at Regency park 2 on Sunday to finalise the modalities for installing the treatment units.
The civic agency had last year installed treatment units in five upscale condominiums -- Vastu apartment in Sector 55, Hamilton Court in DLF Phase 4, World Spa in Sector 31, DLF Courtyard in DLF Phase-5 and ANX apartments.
According to sources in the corporation, once the plants are operational, sanitation workers will start carrying colour-coded bins (green for wet waste and blue for dry) and residents will have to drop their garbage in the bins accordingly.
The waste will be then transferred to the nearest plant for segregation and conversion into organic matter.
“This is a great opportunity for us to collaborate with the MCG in making things better in Gurgaon and we are looking forward to improving the waste management system in the city.” Neeraj Seth, a Green Gurgaon NGO activist, said.
“The kitchen segregation has the advantage of saving on transportation cost besides reducing the load on Bandhwari. Necessary modalities will be finalised before the initiative is launched,” joint commissioner Rohit Yadav said.
Civic bodies across Haryana are focusing on waste management after a Rs 680-crore memorandum of understanding was signed between the government and a private company in this regard during the Happening Haryana Global Investors Summit in February.
