An elderly woman was allegedly robbed of her gold bangles and a finger ring by three men posing as police officers, police said on Thursday. This is the third such case in a fortnight.
Meva Devi (55), who was out for a morning walk in Sector 5, was stopped by three men who tricked her and stole her jewellery on Wednesday morning. An FIR was filed later in the day at Sector 5 police station under Section 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code.
Sub-inspector Rajpal, who is the investigating officer in the case, said the woman was walking on the road when the accused approached her. “Posing as police officers, the accused told the woman that the area was not safe for women and asked her to keep her jewellery safely,” he said.
The accused then offered the woman a piece of paper to keep her jewellery in. Once she kept the jewellery, they folded it and then swapped it with another packet, the police said.
Rajpal said the accused were not wearing police uniforms. Police are trying to get footage from CCTV cameras installed in the area.
On July 16, two elderly women were cheated by men posing as police officers in the same way.
In one case, four men — two of whom posed to be police officers — stole a 50-year-old woman’s four gold bangles and a gold chain at the MG Road around 7am.
Half an hour later, about 4km from the spot of the robbery on MG Road, a 60-year-old woman walking on the road was cheated by a group of three men, who stole her gold chain in the same way.
